Hydro Jetting

Hydro Jetting in Washington, DC & Bethesda

I'm Mike. If you've got a drain that keeps clogging no matter how many times it's been snaked, hydro jetting is probably what you actually need. It's a more thorough process than snaking, and I'll explain exactly what it is and when I recommend it. I'm licensed in DC, bonded, and insured, and I've done over a thousand jobs in this area.

When Snaking Isn't Enough

When Snaking Isn't Enough

A drain snake is a cable with a blade on the end. It punches a hole through a clog and gets the water moving again. For a lot of problems, that's exactly the right fix. But snaking doesn't clean the pipe walls. It just clears a path.

If you've got grease buildup, years of soap scum, or roots that have started working their way into a sewer line, snaking gives you temporary relief. The clog comes back in a few weeks, you call again, same thing. That cycle is a sign the pipe needs to actually be cleaned, not just poked through.

Hydro jetting is also what I use to prep a sewer line before lining it. If you're heading toward a sewer line repair, the pipe needs to be clear first. That's where this fits into the bigger picture.

Is Hydro Jetting Right for Your Drain Problem?

Is Hydro Jetting Right for Your Drain Problem?

Hydro jetting isn't the right call for every situation, and I won't tell you it is. Before I jet any older line, especially clay or cast iron, I run a camera through it first. High-pressure water can stress a pipe that's already cracked or deteriorated. I need to see what I'm working with before I put pressure on it.

If the camera shows the pipe is in decent shape but just heavily built up with grease or scale, jetting is the right move. If it shows cracks, root intrusion, or pipe that's starting to collapse, we're talking about a different conversation. I'll tell you what I see and what I think makes sense. No pressure to go bigger than the problem actually requires.

If you're not sure whether you need drain cleaning, hydro jetting, or something further down the line like a sewer repair, that's fine. I can camera-inspect first and tell you exactly what's going on before any work starts.

Good candidates for hydro jetting

  • Recurring kitchen drain clogs from grease buildup
  • Slow drains throughout the house that snaking hasn't fixed
  • Sewer line prep before pipe lining or repair
  • Commercial kitchens or properties with heavy drain use
  • Root intrusion that's still in early stages
  • Vanity and sink installation
  • Shut-off valve replacement

For straightforward clogs, see my drain cleaning page. If the camera shows something more serious, my sewer line repair page explains what comes next.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does hydro jetting cost in DC? It depends on the line length, how accessible the cleanout is, and whether I need to camera-inspect first. Hydro jetting runs more than a standard drain snake because it's a more involved process with heavier equipment. I'll give you a straight number before any work starts.

What's the difference between drain snaking and hydro jetting? Snaking breaks up a clog and clears a path. Hydro jetting scrubs the pipe walls clean with pressurized water. Snaking is faster and less expensive. Jetting is more thorough and lasts longer. If your drain keeps clogging after snaking, jetting is probably the next step.

Can hydro jetting damage my pipes? It can, if the pipe is already in bad shape. That's exactly why I camera-inspect older lines before jetting them. Clay pipe, old cast iron, anything that's cracked or corroded needs to be looked at first. I won't jet a line blind. If the camera shows the pipe can't handle it, I'll tell you that and we'll talk through what the actual options are.
